Giclee Printing by Picture Bute

What does Giclee actually mean ?

Giclée is a French word meaning ‘a spray or a squirt of liquid’. The term ‘giclée print’ is used to describe the giclée printing process.

Giclée printing is essentially digital inkjet printing – using high quality pigment inks on archival grade paper. Giclée printing has quickly become a convenient method for artists to produce museum quality prints of their work on demand.

The latest pigment inks and substrates have vastly extended the longevity of giclée prints allowing them to become art objects in their own right, even making them collectable for museums and galleries.Giclée printing has quickly become a convenient method for artists to produce museum quality prints of their work on demand.

An advantage that giclée printing offers to artists and publishers is that an edition of work can be printed on demand. Giclée prints are recorded and stored as digital files and can be reproduced as and when required – allowing artists and photographers to print one-offs, or editions of hundreds.

Prints will be exactly the same at the start and end of a print run – even if the run is interrupted and printed on different occasions. This means that the high cost and risk of producing a complete print edition all at once is avoided.

Our Production System

At Picture Bute, we don’t (and won’t) compromise on quality. Our printing set up is centered around our Epson 9890 Wide Format Printer. Designed with the print requirements of the commercial photography and fine art markets in mind, yet also representing a sound choice for the proofing market, the 44-inch Stylus Pro 9890 combines accurate colour with high productivity and one of the highest colour gamuts available with consistently smooth gradations.

The ink we use is the unbeatable UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta inkset: This gives a superior range of natural-looking grey tones. Three densities of black – standard black plus light black and light light black – create striking black and white output with a high contrast ratio, perfect tonal range and improved grey balance without colour casting.

This system also delivers perfect colour: This combination of black inks, coupled with magenta, vivid magenta, cyan, light cyan and yellow gives perfect colour and means prints are free from bronzing, with a uniform surface appearance across both light and dark areas. Metamerism is also reduced, ensuring grey tones are consistent no matter what light source they are viewed under.
